ABOUT THE LECTURE

The Book of Psalms is a much-loved collection of 150 sacred songs composed for a variety of purposes found in the Hebrew Bible. Beyond their uses as inspirational poems and hymns, they have also been used historically for magic and meditation. In this lecture, we will look at meditation and spiritual practices encoded in the Psalms. Specifically, we will be exploring some of the Psalms of Ascents (Pss Nos. 120-134). Pilgrims traditionally sang these Psalms on the journey to Jerusalem with musical accompaniment during the three pilgrimage festivals in the Jewish calendar.
The Psalms of Ascents reflect a mystical practice meant to connect the human and divine worlds, heaven and earth. They also invoke blessings, protection and spiritual gifts from God. These are achieved through meditations, voice, eye-movements, and repeated words and themes that connect to other Psalms and events in scripture. The Psalms draw upon the power and mysticism of the Hebrew aleph-bet. While their uses have evolved and continue to grow over time, they are ancient and rooted in the practices of the ancient Near East.
This lecture aims to reveal to participants some of the esoteric information in a selection of the Psalms of Ascent, which allow us to use them for more than inspiration alone.
