'STAGES OF INITIATION: Comparing Yoga, Buddhism, Theosophy and Gurdjieff's Work
Cyrus Ryan (Canada)
[Cyrus Ryan]
Cyrus Ryan

In this talk we will discuss the different stages of Initiation, with the help of a chart that shows the various esoteric traditions and the different levels of Initiation. The knowledge about Initiation is still relatively new in the West, and for some time many people believed that H P Blavatsky/Theosophy originated the concept.  But Initiation has been the root of all true esoteric traditions for untold ages.  Initiation was a well-guarded secret hidden from the general public and even neophytes, until Theosophy opened the door allowing a glimmer of light to pierce the darkness on this most secret subject.   “Initiation is the process whereby the spiritual man within the personality becomes aware of himself as the soul, with soul powers, soul relationships, and soul purpose.”  ('The Rays and the Initiations', Alice A Bailey. pg. 341)

Creativity and spiritual experiences have marked Cyrus Ryan's life since a young age. He has spent time in India and Tibet, where he gained insights into the practices of esoteric Buddhism, the path of Vajrayana. An artist, writer and lecturer, Cyrus has lectured at The Theosophical Society, the Association for Higher Awareness (AHA), the New Jersey Metaphysical Society, and the University of Seven Rays. He has published articles in a variety of new age periodicals including The Beacon. His art reflects his understanding, his path and his inspiration from the inner esoteric worlds. He was first introduced to Theosophy and the works of Alice A. Bailey in the mid-1970s, and along with his teacher and other aspirants, Cyrus developed a Group Work which later evolved into a unique spiritual gestalt, which drove them deeper into the mysteries. He has been exploring esoteric knowledge for over forty years. Cyrus is the author of ‘Living on the Inner Edge: A Practical Esoteric Tale.’
